Beresheet 2 is SpaceIL’s planned follow-up to its 2019 lunar mission. The Israeli Space Agency describes a mission concept with two lunar landings and a mother spacecraft intended to remain in lunar orbit; international agreements with NASA and Italy set out cooperation, instruments, and scientific planning.

What the agreements establish

In February 2023, the Israel Space Agency and NASA signed a statement of intent for scientific cooperation. NASA’s expected contributions included a spectrometer, communications network support, coordination with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, and participation in landing-site selection and the scientific team. The agency’s announcement of the NASA statement also described a 2025 launch plan at that time; that dated target is not a current confirmed launch date.

In January 2025, the Israel Space Agency and Italian Space Agency signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation. Its announcement describes two landings, scientific experiments on the lunar surface and in its surroundings, and a mother spacecraft planned to orbit the Moon for about five years. It says a joint scientific team would define research priorities and plan experiments. These are announced mission objectives, not evidence that the spacecraft has launched. The Israel–Italy agreement announcement sets out the current publicly described framework.

Technology and international partners

A 2023 agreement with Germany’s DLR covers a navigation algorithm intended to analyze lunar images and identify craters during descent. The Israeli agency’s DLR cooperation update describes the algorithm’s planned role. It also records earlier schedule expectations that should not be treated as a present launch commitment.

The mission’s confirmed status is therefore a defined cooperation effort with announced science goals and planned hardware roles. Final dates, landing locations, and detailed experiment manifests may change as engineering and mission planning continue. The first mission’s engineering and landing attempt are covered in Beresheet 1.
